Notice to collectors, design fans and everyone who’d like to rediscover the essential figures of Italian design! The iconic Italian brand Alessi is celebrating its 100th anniversary with the “Alessi 100 Values Collection”: this collection celebrates the values that define the identity and practice of the Dream Factory (Fabbrica dei Sogni). A collection of surprising objects, from the Alessi Museum's Archive Fund, which includes projects that have never been produced before, brand-new versions of cult objects as well as icons in the making. Twelve projects, each referring to a different value, will be presented over twelve months, from May 2021 to April 2022. Alessi 100 Values Collection celebrates 100 years of applied arts research and the start of a new century of experimentation. The seventh value highlighted by Alessi is Irony, illustrated by a wonderful example: Achille Castiglioni's Bulbul kettle, a real invitation to play. Alberto Alessi explains: “I’m often asked why irony, as a rhetorical figure, is frequently found in our products. I don't know exactly how to answer this question. In fact, its use is closely linked to the individual practice of the different designers and it’s probably a response to the desire not to take ourselves too seriously, to bring a little levity into our daily lives. The Bulbul kettle by Achille Castiglioni is a 1995 model, inspired by curling stones, which is among the prototypes kept by the Alessi Museum. Achille often liked to point out to me that I asked him to design kitchen utensils that he himself never used and that he didn't know much about. His kettle, for example, offers a new way of interacting with the object: as if he were suggesting the possibility of a game of sliding it across the worktop. ” This innovative looking kettle is one of Achille Castiglioni’s many never-before-released creations, the fruit of his inexhaustible curiosity and taste for experimentation. Bulbul highlights the extraordinary ability of Castiglioni to endow a project with qualities and functions inspired by objects belonging to quite different universes. It’s from this game of diversion that the ironic dimension so characteristic of his work is often born. Bulbul is an ideal kettle, nice and round, like a curling stone: from cold water to steam, the entertainment it offers is underlined by the name Castiglioni chose for it, “bul, bul”, or “it’s boiling, it’s boiling” in the dialect of Milan, the city that saw the birth of this essential figure in design. Practical and stable, the Bulbul kettle has a large capacity (2.5 L). It’s convenient to use with its curling stone-inspired handle, which provides a firm, secure grip when the kettle is full. The irony of the object arises from the meticulous attention to the smallest detail of this extraordinary ready-made. An ingenious design capable of transforming an ordinary, almost banal shape into an object with undeniable aesthetics, both unexpected and functional. A future collector’s item, this creation is dedicated to all design connoisseurs, fans of Castiglioni's work and all those who can appreciate the objects that question us and transfigure our domestic landscapes with their playful irony. Achille Castiglioni: Another important factor is knowing how to make fun of yourself … and not taking yourself too seriously with this design, accepting society as it is.
