Michael Anastassiades, the designer of Captain Flint, wanted to design a floor lamp fulfilling two distinct functions: on the one hand, an indirect mood light (directed upwards), and on the other, a direct and practical light (directed downwards). He therefore developed a lampshade which is balanced on a fine rotating rod. A single action is all that's needed to rotate the rod and turn the lampshade from a downwards to an upwards direction.
