valerie objects Chopping board Multicoloured Plastic material. Dimensions: Total size: L 35 x H 70 cm x Depth 9 cm. Known as Muller Van Severen, the Flemish design duo Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen work at the intersection of art and design. They are among the most prominent creators of the moment. From galleries to museums via collectors, design enthusiasts and design houses, everyone loves their minimalist, colourful creations, timeless and joyful. The Flemish design duo Muller Van Severen are enamoured of the polyethylene material they regularly use in their work: “Unlike many other plastics, polyethylene has a soft feel and a certain sensitivity.” Initially, Muller Van Severen planned to simply create a polyethylene sculpture. Along the way, the project was transformed: the sculpture became functionalised to create a set of cutting boards which, once superimposed and hung on the wall, can be displayed like a genuine painting. A brass hook is included to hang the boards on the wall. The boards have various organic, unstructured, irregular shapes. They come in stunning combinations of bright, bold hues. Fien Muller explains: “Although it seems like we created these shapes on a whim, they’re well thought out one by one. It was a careful selection process to decide which corners and edges would be visible and which would be layered.” When arranged, hung on top of each other against the wall, the mixture of varied shapes creates an abstract work of coloured lines. Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen, ex-sculptor and ex-photographer respectively, infuse each of their pieces with a touch of poetry. Hannes explains: “Design is linked to function. We come from the visual arts. So we’re just trying to create sculptural furniture to occupy space. Art or design, creation takes place the same way … and provides the same satisfaction. Poetry is possible even in the industrial”, concludes Fien.
