Designer Alexander Girard is one of the most important figures in the history of post-war American design, along with his colleagues George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames. Girard's work was primarily focused on textile design, but he was also admired for his work as a graphic designer, furniture designer, set designer and interior designer. Girard brought to 20th-century design a seductive, playful dimension that was missing from the austere aesthetics of classical modernism. In 1957, Alexander Girard was chosen to decorate the interior of the legendary Miller House, a mid-20th-century modern home designed by architect Eero Saarinen and located in Columbus, Indiana. The Flower Table (1977) was originally designed by Alexander Girard to furnish the Miller House. Alexander Girard has often combined folk art with abstract motifs. Many of his figuratively expressive patterns and designs have a playfulness about them. Made of powder-coated steel, the Flower coffee table is also suitable for outdoor use.
