The iconic Girotondo collection was designed in 1989 by the design duo Stefano Giovannoni and Guido Venturini (aka King Kong). 30 years after its launch, the success of this historic collection continues unabated. Alessi is celebrating Girotondo's 30th anniversary by launching a luxurious 24-carat gold version. These limited edition, numbered pieces are future collectors’ items! The result of Alessi’s first collaboration with young designers, Girotondo marks the advent of what is today called „fun design“. Presented to Alessi by Alessandro Mendini in the late 1980s, King-Kong (the name under which Stefano Giovannoni and Guido Venturini chose to work together) was a pair of young architects trained in Florence by the master Remo Buti. Two extraordinary characters, with a sensitivity imbued with poetry, humour and common sense, inspired by the world of comic books. Among their drawings, Alberto Alessi loves a very simple tray, with the edges perforated with a pattern in the shape of a man, like those that children cut out of paper. They could not have imagined the future success of this collection. But Guido and Stefano understood the importance of affect, of focusing on the ability of an object to bring out or echo emotions. Thus they gave birth to a fun language which would come to play a fundamental role in the practice of design during the following decade.
