It was designed in 1964, just after the founder of the Marimekko brand, Armi Ratia, publicly announced that she was banning floral motifs, which were considered hackneyed. Maija Isola defied her by drawing a series of floral designs whose style was so innovative and fresh that Armi changed her mind. Ironically, the Unikko motif has become the emblem of the brand. This pillowcase is made from a blend of cotton and unbleached hemp: this durable, low-impact natural fibre uses less water than more conventional fibres. You can pair this pillowcase with the matching duvet cover (sold separately). Founded in 1951, the Marimekko company is a state of mind, an art of living based on creativity, freedom of spirit and inventiveness. Its notoriety dates back to 1960, the year in which Jackie Kennedy made several public appearances in dresses designed by Marimekko.
