The designer Alexander Girard is one of the most important figures in the history of post-war American design, along with his colleagues George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames. Girard's work was primarily focused on textile design, but he also was admired for his work as a graphic designer, furniture designer, set designer and interior designer. Girard brought to 20th century design a seductive and playful dimension that was missing from the austere aesthetics of classical modernism. Alexander Girard paid the same level of attention to every visible surface in a building. The ceilings, walls and floors were created with great care and matched the objects and furniture in the room. The Metal Wall Reliefs collection features metal wall decorations created in the 1960s by Girard for a restaurant called The Compound and for his own home in Santa Fe. Vitra has worked together with the Girard family to select several original designs. They are made of epoxy steel. Alexander Girard has often combined folk art with abstract motifs. Many of his expressive drawings and designs have a playfulness about them. These decorations can be placed on a wall, adding a poetic touch to a wide range of interior styles (attachment system included).
