valerie objects Spice mill Black Plastic material. Dimensions: Ø 10 x H 27 cm. Dutch designer Maarten Baas is known for his iconoclastic, whimsical creations that disrupt traditional typologies. Through his controversial experimental work, Maarten Baas overturns preconceived ideas. He has forged his own world, happily pushing the boundaries of design to show another reality made up of strangeness, optical effects, illusion, play. In collaboration with the Antwerp label Valérie Objects, Maarten Baas has created a complete set of tableware: objects with assumed irregularities and a „handmade“ feel. As ever, Maarten Baas likes to jostle the lines, create irregularity and asymmetry to make his objects more human. To design his pepper mill, Maarten Baas favoured spontaneity rather than perfect symmetry. He created a freehand drawing that was literally translated into an object, making this mill the materialisation of an imperfect sketch. In a world where machines are made to produce straight lines, Maarten Baas' irregular shapes are a real technical challenge to achieve. Made of ABS, this fully functional pepper mill “seems to have been hammered by a grandfather in his barn”. The imperfect, asymmetrical lines, jagged edges and rugged contours of this pepper mill establish a break with the very strict, linear environments that make up our daily lives. By favouring naturalness and irregular shapes rather than perfection, this object communicates an artisanal idea, far from the usual codes and wise rectilinear lines. This mill breaks with strict geometry so you can compose a table like no other.
