Gubi Utensil Black Wood. Dimensions: L 110 x Depth 45 cm x H 191 cm. Danish design house Gubi continues to bridge the gap between eras with a new collection that stands the test of time. To design the Private collection, Danish studio Space Copenhagen was inspired by Japanese craftsmanship, as Charlotte Perriand and Hans J. Wegner did before them. The Private collection is an exercise in purity, symmetry, balance and restraint. Subtly refined, Private furniture combines purity and elegance. This furniture reflects the culture of Japanese design where form must meet function without decorative, unnecessary or superfluous additions. A sensitivity that’s also expressed in the choice of materials (rigorously selected oak veneer), through a keen eye for detail and the influence of craftsmanship. The simplicity of form emphasises the prowess of traditional cabinetmaking. Private uses artisanal techniques, such as grain-matched veneers to ensure a perfectly even surface. Private uses the art of Japanese joints. This thousand-year-old art of Japanese carpenters consists of assembling the different pieces of wooden without glue or nails, by simple interlocking. Private furniture is all supported by two large vertical panels connected by a horizontal wooden beam. This feat of structural engineering elevates each part, and allows it to support enormous weight, while still giving a feeling of lightness. The furniture with its rigorous straight lines is embellished with gilded brass handles. These solid, timeless pieces of furniture are made to last. Space Copenhagen: “For the Private collection, we took inspiration from the beauty of vintage Japanese storage furniture. The defining detail for each piece is a Japanese wooden joint. We went for a simple, strong, recognisable language, focused on high quality, beautiful materials and refined, elegant details. "Mixing wooden and glass, the Private display case lets you show off your most beautiful objects, crockery or books in the living room, the kitchen – or in a hotel or spa lobby. The doors are dressed with oval handles.
